Tennessee's oldest, family-owned bakery is Dutch Maid Bakery in Tracy City. They use the same mixers, ovens and recipes that John Baggenstoss, the founder of Dutch Maid in 1902, used 100 years ago. Scopes Trial Museum - Dayton
Visit the historic 1891 Rhea County Courthouse and the Scopes Trial Museum to learn more about the watershed event, as well as the county’s history. The Scopes Trial became the trial of the century in 1925 whch was a clash about teaching evolution in public schools. The courtroom was electryfing, introducing the legendary three-time presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan, John T. Scopes and Clarence Darrow, a renowned defense attorney.
Children's Holocaust Memorial - Whitwell
The Children's Holocaust Museum was born from a 1998 Whitwell Middle School eight-grade study of the Holocaust. After some research, the students discovered Joseph Valler, a Norwegian Jew credited for inventing the paperclip. Norwegians wore paperclips on their lapels as a silent project against Nazi occupation in WWII. Students began bringing in paper clips and wrote letters to famous people asking for paperclips and their responses. Over 30,000 letters and over 30 million paperclips have been sent to the middle school. The memorial has 11 million paperclips houses in an authentic German transport car, honoring the lives of all people who were murdered by the Nazis. An additional 11 million paperclips are included in a monument honoring the children of the Holocaust. Read the letters, documents, books and see artifacts displayed in the Children's Holocaust Memorial Artifact Library. Guided tours can be booked a week in advance and are $2 per person.
