Poet, educator, humanitarian and best-selling author, Nikki Giovanni, widely known for her riveting speech following the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings, was born in Knoxville and studied at Fisk University. Winner of the Tennessee Governor's Award in the Humanities and a National Book Award finalist, she is the author of more than thirty books, including children's books, Knoxville, Tennessee and the Caldecott Honor Book Rosa.
