The Chattanooga Nature Center has been living and teaching the principles of conservation, even before "being green" in the Tennessee Valley was the popular thing to do. Over thirty years ago, a group of far-sighted individuals had a dream to bring nature into the lives of every Chattanooga citizen—from school children, to families, to senior citizens. This committed group, under the direction of the Junior League of Chattanooga and with the help of generous donors, built a nature center using the most innovative, sustainable design available at that time. Their goal was to inspire people, not only with wonders of the natural world, but also with the knowledge necessary to preserve nature for future generations. Whether you are here to enjoy a picnic or plan to spend hours in meandering through our gardens, the Chattanooga Arboretum and Nature Center is a great place to experience the wonder of nature, and reflect on our role in preserving it for the future generations. Nestled at the foot of Lookout Mountain, you will find the Chattanooga Arboretum and Nature Center, one of the area's most historic and scenic natural wonders. Discover 317 acres of forest, field and stream. Walk, bike or drive around the Reflection Riding Loop to experience its beautiful gardens, lush forests, and colorful wildflower meadows. Be prepared to encounter native wildlife, including deer, turkey, beaver, and many species of birds that live on this unique landscape. Travel in the footsteps of early Tennessee Valley Native Americans, pioneer settlers and Civil War soldiers. Step inside the restored log homes of Cherokee Chief Walking Stick or Squincy Bird, and walk a section of the ancient Cisca Trail. Visit the unique George S. Bryan Discovery Forest Treehouse and the Paddler's Perch located on the banks of Lookout Creek. Follow the Blue Heron Boardwalk to the Wildlife Wanderland, where you can observe captive native animals including the highly endangered Red Wolves. CA&NC has something for everyone, from a leisurely picnic under the trees, or a paddle down the creek, to a heart-pumping hike on the 15 miles of trails. It is all yours to explore! Under the Tennessee Arboretum Certification Program, Chattanooga Arboretum and Nature Center is certified as a Level Four Arboretum. Events this year include Herpetology, Introduction to Sandhill Cranes, Photography 101, Marie Humphreys Wildflower Festival & Native Plant Sale and many more.
