Learn more about Meet and Greet with the Marquis de Lafayette.
During the American Revolution, the Marquis de Lafayette of France volunteered to fight in the Continental Army. He became a trusted army officer and valued friend of George Washington, and his service became a symbol of the alliance between France and the burgeoning United States. In 1824 and 1825, Lafayette returned to the United States for a tour stretching from New York to Louisiana, including stops in Nashville and Clarksville, Tennessee. When he arrived at the Nashville Public Square, on May 4, 1825, a sign proclaimed, “Welcome Lafayette, Friend of Liberty.”
In partnership with The American Friends of Lafayette, and to complement the Museum’s temporary display of artifacts related to the Marquis’s visit to Nashville, we are proud to welcome the Marquis back to Nashville once more on Sunday, May 4. From 2-4 p.m., with brief lectures at 2:30 and 3:30, renowned Lafayette interpreter Charles Wissinger will be in our gallery to visit with guests, discuss the artifacts in the Museum’s collection, and answer questions about both his role in the American Revolution and his return visit the United States in 1824-25. Learn from the man himself! And be sure to bring the family and get a selfie with Marquis
