Charlie Cushman was born in Clarksville, Tennessee. He is chiefly renowned for his mastery of the Earl Scruggs-style, three-finger banjo technique. He was one of the founding members of the Grammy Award-winning bluegrass band The Earls of Leicester and is globally recognized as a leading authority on the Gibson Mastertone banjo. He has performed with Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Merle Haggard, Andy Griffith and countless others.

See the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center, one of the most photographed buildings in the state.
