Dover Hotel / Surrender House

The 1851 Dover Hotel was the Civil War site of the "unconditional surrender" of Confederate General Simon Buckner to Union General Ulysses S. Grant on February 16, 1862. This was the Union Army's first major victory of the war, setting the stage for invasion of the South and eventual capture of the Mississippi River Valley. The house with two-story porches is located on the edge of downtown Dover overlooking the Cumberland River. Open daily.
