Tennessee Music Pathways
Travel to Jamestown, Tennessee, about 2 hours and 10 minutes northeast of Nashville, to see the hometown and Tennessee Music Pathways marker of The Hicks Family, keepers of several hundred traditional Anglo-American songs and folklore. Folklorist Bob Fulcher recorded Dee and Delta Hicks’ extensive repertoire in 1977 for the Library of Congress. “He was able to sing the longest and most complete versions of the ancient ballads ever collected, and about 20 traditional songs are known to posterity only through his versions,” said Fulcher.
Take in the music history of Jamestown, Tennessee and then the scenery at Pickett CCC Memorial State Park, the first state park in the Southeast designated as a certified dark sky viewing location by the International Dark-Sky Association. Check out the new Pickett State Park Archaeology Museum and ETSU Archaeological Research Station that houses Native American prehistory of the Upper Cumberland Plateau region. You’ll also find natural bridges, waterfalls and family-friendly hikes. Tennessee’s oldest winery is also in Jamestown. Highland Manor Winery has produced sweet, semi-dry and dry wines for more than 30 years. Other activities include fishing on nearby Dale Hollow Lake, exploring Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area, and seeing the home of family farm of World War I hero, Sgt. Alvin C. York.
