Collierville’s Civil War history is centered on the Train Depot, where Confederates disrupting Union supply lines attacked what they believed to be a small Federal garrison. The arrival of Gen. William Sherman changed the course of the battle, but not before Confederate soldiers had fired on Sherman’s train and captured his favorite horse, Dolly. The battle helped form Sherman’s strategy for his “March to Sea.”
